Milestones
2010
• SMBI started its operational activities in collaboration with South Tyneside College, UK.
2011
• SMBI launched officially after getting approval from the government of peoples republic of Bangladesh.
• First batch of marine cadets enrolled (38 students).
2012
• First batch of SMBI cadets completed their first academic year in Bangladesh and joined South Tyneside College, UK for completion of their HND certificate course.
2013
• The full academic cycle of first batch of marine cadets was completed through returning to Bangladesh and they were employed by a leading shipping company based in Singapore, Jaya Holdings.
• SMBI started developing their own multi facility campus located in Savar, Dhaka
SMBI Facilities
Classrooms
All classrooms are fully air-conditioned. Students are provided individual chair and desk with additional larger desks for chart work and drawing purposes. The classrooms have presentation equipment’s which include Overhead projectors and video projectors. All classrooms have white boards to enable teaching materials to be displayed. Each classroom can contain up to 25 students comfortably, keeping the group small so that the faculty members are able to provide close attention to individual student needs.
Training Aid
A collection of equipment from ships are available which enable faculty members, supervisors and technicians to explain and demonstrate practical operations to the students. These operations include metrology, strength of materials, plant operations, navigation aids and more.
Engineering Workshop
There is also a fully air conditioned engineering workshop with four center lathes, one vertical miller and a minimum of 10 workbenches for the student to use
Computer Lab
A fully air-conditioned computer lab with a minimum of 12 operating computers, at all times, is also provided. All computers are linked to the internet enabling student’s access for research and study purposes
Cafeteria
Air-conditioned cafeteria with a seating capacity of 100 students at a time
can also be found at SMBI. Food served is of mixed cuisine to help candidates to get accustomed to various types of food preparations. The diet is
well balanced and the food is wholesome.
Hostel facilities
Hostel facilities for the students consist of well-designed dormitories and bathrooms. Mattresses, pillows, bed sheets and pillow covers will be supplied to each student on the date of joining for their use during their course.
Library
The library accommodates hundreds of books on Marine Engineering and Nautical Science by renowned publishers, e.g. Reeds Series, supporting
students to carry out research in a quiet well stacked environment. The library is managed by Chief Librarian.
